The source video is long gone, but this gif is an FSAE team from somewhere non-USA testing their impact attenuator by driving their running car into the bucket of a backhoe while the driver is wearing no safety equipment aside from the harness. The number of things wrong here is a lot, don’t try to replicate this.

That looked like it hurt.

I thought FSAE people were supposed to be smart.

I learned so many things from Calvin and Hobbes, like how babies were made, “drop dead”, and “bimbo”

I’m pretty sure the team is from India, seeing how teams from that country interact with the rest of the FSAE world it’s amazing anything gets built in the first place. Example:

Just found a pic of their chassis:
As a ME student who barely got a B in statics I can confidently say that’s what we in the industry call a complete fucking deathtrap.
At least they’re trying?

The only thing worse is asking questions that are basically “I need this concept. Give me numbers.”

Never underestimate an engineer(ing student).

well ive done that faster and with no harness.
snowmobiles are really fun tho

This isn’t an e-penis contest, plus who brags about crashing?
![]() 11/03/2015 at 03:00 |

im just saying that thats not a very fast or hard crash. especially strapped in with a harness

The gif is much slower than in reality, the car was going atleast 15mph if not faster, sadly the source video no longer exists so there’s no way to get an accurate number.
Per FSAE regulations, the impact attenuator must absorb at least 7,350 Joules of energy. Its deceleration was around an average of 15Gs, no matter how you slice it, that’s a of force being dumped into the body.

I think I remember this from a few years ago when I was in FSAE, unless its another idiot team.......
Its amazing how easy it is to test the crash block. Surprisingly, there are companies that do it.....

It’s the same team, I really wish the video existed because it showed the violence a lot better.

I remember this video, and Michael Royce’s discussion thereof...

That was well before I joined FSAE.com, I think I saw that thread but not sure.

It was also a point of discussion at the event, at least away from the students...
